If a Mediterranean Community came back to life…

COVER MAP: An alliance of this kind has lived many times over the past millennia. A natural alliance, logical, because the states or human communities living on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea have a lot in common, so much. It is equally obvious that the other neighboring states, even if not directly wet by the “Mare Nostrum” (Our Sea), create with the Mediterranean and all of its communities the right relationship for trade and cooperation, and therefore they also can also be part of the MEDITERRANEAN COMMUNITY, as peaceful as constructive.

Preface

By Guido De Simone

Problems arise only if and when someone creates them (and unfortunately that kind of persons never lacks), but especially if no one does something to solve them or, better, prevent them.

In recent times, the Mediterranean is one of the areas of the world with a considerable amount of problems and some are now genuinely troublesome.

Two years ago (June 2015), on the pages of this newspaper, provocatively an article hypothesized that a solution to all these problems could consist in creating a MEDITERRANEAN COMMUNITY, or even a MEDITERRANEAN UNION.

The spirit with which this initiative can be taken is at least in part the one that has given rise to the European Union, perhaps by avoiding the same mistakes that today put it in a deep crisis.

Paradoxically, however, such an initiative could also solve the crisis of identity of the European Union, which must find the stimulus that led its “Founding Fathers” to conceive a project that is far from being realized… or we could dare to say that he was betrayed; and today everyone sees the pathetic results of it.

To understand the extent of the problem to create a MEDITERRAN COMMUNITY, it is good to begin to understand the reality of the different communities that face the Mediterranean Sea or which are historically linked to it.

Let’s start, then, an exploration of each of the national communities concerned.
